The Deep Ecliptic Survey is an on-going project to survey the near-ecliptic region of the outer solar system in search of Kuiper Belt objects. Data is gathered using the Mosaic cameras at the Kitt Peak and Cerro Tololo Blanco 4-m telescopes.
The NSF-funded summer project that I worked on incorporated two main components: Building software tools to insert false objects into the flattened, reduced images gathered as part of the DES, and participating in the incorporation of these tools into the data processing procedure for the July run at CTIO. Insertion of false objects (referred to as salting) is performed in order to accurately determine the detection efficiency of the survey procedures. Knowing this information allows a better model to be developed from known data. The nature of the data processing procedure is such that this information is necessarily determined through salting.
