Version: 09/28/2026 Jules Halpern Instructions for MDM observing PIs in the event that your proposal is assigned time in the 2027A semester: (If you have been given only 2.4m Proxy Queue time, skip to the separate "Instructions for Proxy Queue" below.) Check the online observing schedule and locate your name on it: http://mdm.kpno.noirlab.edu/schedule.html This is your time on the telescope, and you are responsible for supplying a qualified observer. In the event that the official upcoming semester's schedule is not yet posted, you can look for the preliminary schedule here: http://user.astro.columbia.edu/~jules/MDM_2027A_prelim.html At least two weeks before each of your scheduled runs, submit the on-line "Observing Preparation Form" located here: http://mdm.kpno.noirlab.edu This form covers logistics such as instrument and detector setup, filter usage, arrival and departure times, and dormitory occupation, details of which have to be planned for in advance by the small MDM staff. Due to insurance restrictions, observatory vehicles can only be driven by staff. Observers are responsible for their own transportation. Note that observing remotely is only possible on the 1.3m telescope, but you have to discuss with your department's MDM representative the requirements for qualifying for remote observing if you are new to it, and get permission from them before you can observe remotely. Remote observing means that you operate the telescope and instrument yourself; there is no operator on site. For remote observing runs, you still have to fill out the observing preparation form. Instructions for Proxy Queue: The Proxy Queue only uses the OSMOS instrument on the 2.4m telescope. Queue targets will be observed on a best-effort basis. There is no need to fill out an observing preparation form. Instead, you will communicate by email with the proxy observer, sending your target coordinates, finding charts, and details of OSMOS setup. You should be aware of the dates of Proxy Queue runs on the observing schedule http://mdm.kpno.noirlab.edu/schedule.html and send the proxy observer your instructions at least two weeks before the first run in which your targets will be visible. The proxy observer is Justin Anderson (anjustin@umich.edu). Also, note that queue data are not archived. You should retrieve your data within two weeks of its acquisition, after which it is likely that they will disappear.
