    PRESS RELEASES (EurekAlert! Service)

"CHANDRA TAKES IN THE BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY OF THE MILKY WAY," Chandra X-Ray Observatory Center press release 02-03, Jan 10 2002. NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory has made a stunning, high-energy panorama of the central regions of our Milky Way galaxy. The findings are an important step toward the understanding the most active area of the Galaxy as well as other galaxies throughout the Universe.
"CHANDRA ASSOCIATES PULSAR AND HISTORIC SUPERNOVA," Chandra X-Ray Observatory Center press release 01-02, Jan 10 2001. Scientists have located the pulsar in the center of supernova remnant G11.2-0.3. Provides new evidence linking these objects with the supernova explosion of 386 AD witnessed by Chinese astronomers.
"ASTRONOMERS FIND THE YOUNGEST PULSAR YET IN THE HEART OF AN EXPLODED STAR," Columbia University/NASA press release 00-98, Aug 10 2000. Youngest pulsar yet discovered, residing in its supernova remnant. Provides the first strong evidence in our Galaxy that neutron stars are the stellar embers of exploded stars.
"'MISSING' PULSARS WITHIN EXPLODED STARS IDENTIFIED BY COLUMBIA, CALTECH ASTRONOMERS," Columbia University Press Release, Jan 1999. Most neutron stars in the center of supernova remnants have been missed in conventional radio pulsar searches. New evidence reveal these young pulsar are only visible in the light of X-rays.
"FAST-SPINNING YOUNG PULSAR DISCOVERED," NASA news release 98-01, Jan 1998. A 5000 year-old neutron star in the center of a supernova remant rotating at more than 60 times per second. This rapid initial spin of the pulsar places important constrains on physical models of neutron stars
"SLOWEST KNOWN PULSAR REPORTED," NASA press release 97-131, Oct 1997. The first compelling evidence for a "MAGNETAR" - a neutron star with an enormous magnetic field of 10^14 Gauss - the largest known in the Universe.
