Pupin 1402

Seminar by Zephyr Penoyre, Leiden Observatory

Until proven otherwise we should assume every point of light consists of multiple bodies - binary stars in particular are ubiquitous and most likely unresolvable.

I’ll talk about how Gaia, with its precise astronomy and still-lengthening baseline, is capable of detecting the presence, and in ideal cases, the orbit of a huge new sample of stellar companions - not just binary stars but compact objects, brown dwarfs and exoplanets.
