Gravitational self-regulation in protostellar disks: theory, observation, and implications for planet formation

Embedded, Class 0/I protostellar disks represent the initial condition for planet formation. But many open questions surround them: How much gas and dust mass do they have? What are the main sources of turbulence and angular-momentum transport? How do dust grains in young disks grow and drift? Is early planet formation possible? In this talk I will provide quantitative answers to these questions through a synergy of simulation, theory, and observation. I will introduce a novel theoretical model of protostellar disks, "gravitational self-regulation", show how we test it against recent ALMA and VLA observations of Class 0/I disks, and discuss how it helps to more reliably constrain disk mass, disk temperature, and dust properties.
